China and University of Haifa sign $10M deal on artificial intelligence

Rambam Haifa towerUniversity of Haifa signed an agreement with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Hangzhou Wahaha Group to build three Israeli-Chinese Artificial Intelligence centres in Haifa, Beijing and Hangzhou. The centres will house R&D facilities with an initial investment of $10M by Mr. Zhou Qinghou, Chairman of Wahaha.

The new centres will select cutting-edge application technologies from University of Haifa and the Chinese Academy of Sciences that can be commercialised, including vision tracking through mobile devices, image processing and big data for medical application, 3D image learning, chip technologies and biometric identification.

The agreement was signed in China in the presence of Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and University President Ron Robin (pictured above with Mr. Qinghou), as part of a three-day official trip to boost business ties between the countries, reports Forbes.

Deborah Lipstadt to receive Honorary Doctorate, Law Faculty gets top marks and more news from the University of Haifa

Deborah Lipstadt to be awarded Honorary Doctorate from the University of Haifa

American historian and leader in the fight against Holocaust denial, Prof. Deborah Lipstadt is among this year’s distinguished recipients of Honorary Doctorates of the University of Haifa in a ceremony on 6th June.

Best known as author of the books Denying the Holocaust (1993)and History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier (2005), she is currently a Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University.

Lipstadt’s book History on Trial is currently depicted in the film Denial, portraying the Irving v Lipstadt and Penguin Books case when the she was sued by Holocaust denier David Irving for libel. Led by Anthony Julius, also an Honorary Doctor of the University of Haifa, Lipstadt’s and Penguin’s defence teams won the case. “Many would like to stand up to antisemites. I had the chance to do it,” she said in a recent interview.
