PRESTIGIOUS AWARD TO HAIFA UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR ON RESEARCHING EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY

Congratulations to Prof. Eviatar Nevo of The Institute of Evolution who has been selected to receive The Albert Einstein Award of Excellence 2011 of The American Biographical Institute. Prof. Nevo received the prize in the field of evolutionary biology for his great contributions to research of this field.

 

INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE STUDIES IN HAIFA

Professor Arieh Kochavi, Director of the first graduate programme in Israel for Holocaust Studies and head of the School of History at Haifa University, says: “the new programme is in response to the urgent need to cultivate a new generation of Holocaust scholars and researchers”. The international graduate programme in Peace and Conflict Management Studies opened with 8 Israelis and 17 international students. The one-year programme combines intensive English language classes with a deep understanding of the theories and their applications in real time from a local and international perspective. “Israel, and especially Haifa, is one of the best places to study conflict because conflict is a part of daily life here," said Jeremy Rockmacher, a 20-year-old New York native. An article in Ma'ariv newspaper that reviewed the international study programmes in the Israeli academia identified Haifa University as the leading institution in the field. “The greatest changes occurred at the University of Haifa: According to the new strategic plan, in five to seven years the University will host 3,000 international students.”

 

EMBRACING THE FAMILIES OF THE CARMEL FIRE DISASTER
One year after the tragedy, at a special memorial event at Haifa University, 44 students were awarded scholarships, each one in memory of one of the victims of the disaster.
“I consider this memorial at the University of Haifa a very praiseworthy initiative. It is no coincidence that the same institution that has been educating the security forces over the years, and that provided notable assistance to the security and rescue services during the fire on the Carmel, is the same institution to be memorializing the fallen now,” said Minister of Internal Security Yitzhak Aharonovich.

RETURN OF THE NAUTILUS
The Nautilus research ship embarked on a second expedition of joint research activity with the University of Haifa’s Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences. The Nautilus project is an international endeavour to navigate the sea floor with state-of-the-art technologies, including diving robots and elaborate control rooms. This leg was dedicated to looking for evidence fluid and gas seeps, and exploring a deep sea coral reef. See the expedition summary here.
